New Evangelization
by Bonnie and Daniel Nevarez
“You speaking to me?” This great line spoken by Alan Ladd in the famous classic, good-against-evil, western movie 'Shane' is the eternal question we should be asking God when we hear or see New Evangelization. We see this same parable in the old-time poster of Uncle Sam pointing at whoever is reading the poster: 'I WANT YOU.'
It is not mere coincidence the opening line of Holy Scripture in Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning” and in John 1:1 is “In the beginning.” “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3) is God's first, universal, and eternal call to each of us in our own life: the Word is the Light of the World.
Being created in the image and likeness of God, i.e. The Blessed Trinity, indicates we too have free-will like God to exercise our sovereignty. We can choose, by the grace of God, to let in the one who knocks, i.e. The light, or remain in darkness and chaos.
The baptism of Jesus shows us there are no exceptions. No matter who we are at whatever stage of mental or spiritual development; we are still subject to “Let there be light.”
“I have much more to tell you,...” (John 16:12). And Yes, HE is speaking to YOU. What then do we need to do?
In the New Evangelization there are several categories for continuous improvement: Prayer, Repentance, Adoration, Conversion, and Bearing Witness to Christ 'the Light.' Each category is clearly outlined in Holy Scripture and in the Sacred Traditions of the Church. Humility is needed to exercise these improvements.
By this line of thought, the three processes in our diocese, namely (1) Christian Initiation, (2) Liturgical Renewal, and (3) Call to Holiness can be seen as three reflections of the same truth. Jesus Christ is Lord and He does lead us on the way to Eternal Life. He is the Light we are to let into our lives everyday without end. Pray to Him, then be still and 'Listen.'
“Are you speaking to me?” Yes, I AM. Jesus resolved to go to Jerusalem. Are we resolved to go to heaven?
The New Evangelization Team invites you to pray daily. Here on our web site, www.tylerevangelization.com, there is more for you to see.
